On the 6 and 7 December 2018, IZA and DFID hosted the conference on Labour Markets in Eastern Africa: Evidence and Policy Lessons at the UNECA Conference Centre, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The goal of this conference is to bring together academic researchers, policy makers, and representatives of governmental and non-governmental organizations engaged in labour market issues in East Africa. Participants from around the world discussed the latest research on labour market issues in low-income countries and presented research progress of funded research projects by the GLM|LIC programme. This year, keynote speech was given by Dr. Vera Songwe, Executive Secretary of the UN Economic Commission for Africa who addressed insights and thoughts on labour markets and economic growth in Africa
Following the conference, a short course on program evaluation took place in Addis Ababa on the 8 and 9 December. The event aims to train students to apply cutting-edge quantitative economics and enhance their analytic skills to conduct field experiment and evaluate their impact. Over the course of the two days, about 50 students from Eastern Africa were lectured on several topics including experimental design, propensity score matching and difference-in-differences estimations.
